For the removal of sub-gingival calculus and for root cleaning.  Universal curettes are designed to work in all areas of the mouth with a semi-circular tip used at 90^o to the root surface of the tooth. Sharpened on both sides of the blade.

Blade/Cutting Edges perpendicular 90 degrees relative to the shank.  Rounded back (semi-circular cross section) and round tip/toe for a less traumatic sub-gingival cleansing.

Curettes have a rounded toe, so the position of the sharpening stone is adapted around the rounded cross-section.
